We don’t get enough sun. Plain and simple – we spend 93% of our time indoors, decreasing our body’s natural ability to function. Red Light Therapy conveniently reintroduces the healing power of the sun, improving how our cells produce energy. When our cells have the energy they need to function, they can alleviate many of our modern-day health challenges, making us feel better.
Our ancestors didn’t have to think too much about the amount of light they got every day, they received the perfect blend of light provided by the sun during the day and around the fire at night.
The concept that “sunlight was medicine” and considered necessary for human health eventually became general knowledge; today referred to as Heliotherapy, or sunlight therapy.
Despite its recent popularity, red light therapy has close to a 100 year history of scientific research and medical uses. However, the sun has been popular with humans for healing for a little bit longer – approximately 300,000 years.
Just like plants depend on sunlight to flourish, the human body is dependent on light for its health and wellbeing. Like the nutrients our cells get from food, light can be thought of as a nutrient that is necessary for our cells to function optimally.
Over the last several decades scientists and healthcare providers have published thousands of studies on the power of light therapy and its positive effects on cellular function.
Red and Near Infrared Light therapy stimulates your body’s natural healing process through increased cellular energy (ATP) production. Those energized cells in turn strengthen our body’s own healing capabilities through decreasing inflammation, increasing blood flow to our tissues and increasing collagen production for improved tissue regeneration and repair.
The benefit? Sweet, sweet healing.
We recommend using your Fringe red light therapy panel 4-6 inches away from the body, once a day, for 10-30 minute sessions. You can do multiple body parts for 10-30 minutes each.
Room lighting with a panel: You can use the panel to light up a room for as many hours during the day or night as you would like- but for sleep we recommend lighting up your room for 30 mins – 1 hour before bed. You can also do 30 mins – 1 hour in the morning as well for an extra boost!
Please be careful, but eye protection is not required when using red light therapy. Eye protection is optional if your eyes are irritated by bright light.
We don’t recommend staring directly into the red light therapy panel while eyes open as it can be uncomfortable or irritating.
We provide glasses with the panel if you find the light irritates your eyes.
You must turn your panel on with the manual switches on the back in order for the remote to be able to affect the light.
The RED switch turns on the Red Light, and the NIR switch turns on the Near Infrared Light. You can choose to turn on 1 switch or both! Both forms of light have overlapping healing benefits, therefore we recommend using them together.
Remember, you won’t see the near infrared lights when they are on. Near infrared light is not visible to our eyes but it is still working, and you may notice it creates some mild warmth with time.
Set up your panel 4-6 inches from the desired treatment area for 10-30 minutes. The panel can create some warming effect on your skin but should not be hot. If you detect the heat is rising – reduce your time or move further away from the panel than the recommended 6 inches.
For use to help regulate sleep and mood, turn on the RED light as ambient lighting for 30 minutes before bed or as you wake in the morning.
As an alternative to bright lights in the evening, consider using the RED light for evening lighting 30-60 minutes before bed or as an alternative to home lights after the sun sets.
Irradiance is the amount of light energy your skin receives over a period, often reported in mW/cm² (milliwatts per centimeter squared, or amount of power over a surface area). Clinical studies often report red light irradiance along with the time of use as “dosage.” Higher irradiance or power does not mean better results, if the dose is too great – the benefits are negated!
Many companies claim to have an irradiance of 100mW/cm² (or more) at 0 inches.
Man, that would be HOT! The sun is about 24 mW/cm²on our skin, and we think the sun knows a thing or two about healing! Think of your Fringe Red Light Therapy as a way to safely supplement the healing wavelengths from the sun that offer us the most benefits.
Light Intensity, sometimes referred to as irradiance, is the amount of light energy your skin receives over a given period of time. Higher intensity of light does not mean better results, if the intensity is too great – the benefits are negated!
While many companies claim to have over 100mW/cm2 of light intensity (too hot!), we have engineered all our red light therapy products to deliver this sun-like light intensity of 20-40mW/cm2 for each session.
