How Red Light Therapy Supports External Female Pelvic Health
The external pelvic tissues are among the least discussed and most poorly served areas of women’s health. They are reshaped by every life stage - childbirth, hormonal transitions, and aging all change this tissue substantially. Whether it is tissue trauma or changes to the structural integrity of the external female pelvic tissue - The conversation about care for this area of the body barely happens, and the options that are offered for at home therapy are extremely limited. Until now!
In our latest blog, we explore the science behind these emerging areas and how the Fringe Light therapy liner was designed to bring light therapy directly to these important tissues.
Why Red Light Therapy?
We don’t get enough sun. Plain and simple – we spend 93% of our time indoors, decreasing our body’s natural ability to function. Red Light Therapy conveniently reintroduces the healing power of the sun, improving how our cells produce energy.
When our cells have the energy they need to function, they can alleviate many of our modern-day health challenges, making us feel better.
More isn't better
Light Intensity, sometimes referred to as irradiance, is the amount of light energy your skin receives over a given period of time. Higher intensity of light does not mean better results, if the intensity is too great – the benefits are negated!
While many companies claim to have over 100mW/cm2 of light intensity (too hot!), we have engineered all our red light therapy products to deliver this sun-like light intensity of 20-40mW/cm2 for each session.
At Fringe, we have committed to accurate and honest measurements. We test all of our red light therapy products to verify wavelengths and light intensity and then we publish the data for you to look at.
Yesterday's Medicine
Our ancestors didn’t have to think too much about the amount of light they got every day, they received the perfect blend of light provided by the sun during the day and around the fire at night.
The concept that “sunlight was medicine” and considered necessary for human health eventually became general knowledge; today referred to as Heliotherapy, or sunlight therapy.
Despite its recent popularity, red light therapy has close to a 100 year history of scientific research and medical uses. However, the sun has been popular with humans for healing for a little bit longer – approximately 300,000 years.
Today's Science
Just like plants depend on sunlight to flourish, the human body is dependent on light for its health and wellbeing. Like the nutrients our cells get from food, light can be thought of as a nutrient that is necessary for our cells to function optimally.
Over the last several decades scientists and healthcare providers have published thousands of studies on the power of light therapy and its positive effects on cellular function.
Red and Near Infrared Light therapy stimulates your body’s natural healing process through increased cellular energy (ATP) production. Those energized cells in turn strengthen our body’s own healing capabilities through decreasing inflammation, increasing blood flow to our tissues and increasing collagen production for improved tissue regeneration and repair.
The benefit? Sweet, sweet healing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why three wavelengths?
Why three wavelengths?
Because each one is absorbed at a different depth. Red at 660 nm works close to the surface, supporting cellular energy production, blood flow, tissue repair, inflammation, and pain. Near-infrared at 850 nm penetrates further, reaching superficial muscle and connective tissue that red light does not. Blue at 415 nm stays at the very top fraction of a millimetre, where it has antimicrobial activity. The liner delivers 20 to 30 mW/cm² through 38 three-chip LEDs in a 1:1:1 ratio.
Where does the light actually reach?
Where does the light actually reach?
External vulvar and perineal skin, the tissue just beneath the surface, superficial perineal muscle and connective tissue, and perianal skin. It does not reach the uterus, ovaries, bladder, vaginal canal, or the deep pelvic floor muscles.
What can I use it for?
What can I use it for?
It is designed for external comfort and tissue support. People use it for postpartum recovery, pelvic tension and discomfort, dryness and fragile tissue during perimenopause and menopause, and everyday friction and irritation from cycling, running, long days sitting, or wearing pads. Our blog (LINK) walks through ten specific uses in detail, and it is honest about which ones have research behind them and which rest on mechanism alone.
Who should NOT use it?
Who should NOT use it?
Do not use it if you have broken skin, an open wound, stitches, or an unhealed tear or episiotomy a provider has not cleared, or if you have an unassessed active infection such as a suspected abscess, a herpes outbreak, or a possible urinary tract infection. Consult a healthcare professional first if you are pregnant, postpartum or recovering from pelvic surgery, have a current or previous cancer diagnosis particularly in the pelvic region, take a medication that increases light sensitivity, have a photosensitive condition, have a mole, lesion, lump, or skin change in the area, or have persistent or worsening discomfort, itching, or burning.
fringe fine print
Consulting your healthcare provider prior to use if you are pregnant, have recently had a steroid injection or use topical steroids, are sensitive to light, or are using any medications that may increase
sensitivity to light.
If you experience discomfort or have any concerns at all about the light, stop using it immediately and contact your healthcare provider.
